About: Alexander Boot
Profile
Born in Russia and educated at Moscow University, Alexander Boot lectured on English literature, wrote art and film criticism, and made a nuisance of himself with the authorities. Pursued by the KGB, he emigrated in 1973, first to the USA and then, in 1988, to the UK. For a long time he combined writing for various publications with a successful business career. When this became difficult, he retired as company director in 2005 and began to write full-time. Alexander Boot is the author of
How the West Was Lost (2006),
God and Man According to Tolstoy (2009),
The Crisis Behind Our Crisis (2011),
How the Future Worked (2013),
Democracy as a Neocon Trick (2014) and co-author of
A Nation That Forgot God (2010). He divides his time between London and Burgundy, working on his next book.

Certainly not me. Not any longer, at any rate, and I regret having in the past described the Labour party as a collection of openly subversive nincompoops. For the ex-minister David Lammy, MP, hasn’t just proposed a change in law. What he has come up with is nothing less thanRead More
How many crimes does Putin have to commit before our ‘conservatives’ and ‘libertarians’ realise he and his regime are indeed criminal? There is no limit, I’m afraid, as there is no limit to people’s idiocy – especially when it’s propped up by strident ideology. Putin is self-admittedly proud of beingRead More
Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael Graydon put it in a nutshell: “I very much doubt whether the UK could sustain a shooting war against Russia.” Air Commodore Andrew Lambert concurs: “If the Russians turned up the heat, we would struggle badly.” No wonder. Since 2010 HMG has cut £4.7 billionRead More
Putin poses a ‘real and present danger’ to the Baltic states and therefore to Nato, says the Defence Secretary. Nato, according to him, is getting ready to repel any aggression. The first part of the statement is easy to welcome. The second is hard to believe. The welcome part isRead More
“Jews didn’t desert New York after 9/11 so why on earth does Netanyahu want them to run away now?” asks one of our more objectionable columnists. In other words, he fails to see the difference between flying planes into buildings full of multi-national, multi-cultural and multi-confessional victims, and attacks thatRead More
The Bank of America estimated last week that, if a Labour-led coalition takes over in May, our economic growth will screech to a halt and foreign investors will lose confidence. “In a nutshell,” the report concluded, “the UK would look increasingly like France.” Now, considering that France’s growth rate isRead More
Our established Church used to be called the Tory party at prayer. No more. The prayer part of it has been debauched by female priesthood and, to crown it all, episcopate. And as to the Tory bit, the Church is firmly positioning itself on the left of the political spectrum.Read More
Two days ago I wrote a piece whose message was summed up in its title: “There will be no Grexit.” At that time international economists were demonstrating, calculators in hand, that it was economically impossible for Greece to stay in the Eurozone definitely, and in the EU probably. And AngieRead More
Here, some 100 miles south of Paris, things are peacefully quiet. In Paris itself there is no peace and there is no quiet. Yet another lot of innocent blood has been spilled by Muslim terrorism; yet another well of typographic paint has been uncapped. I can’t really add much toRead More
Amsterdam is lovely this time of the year, partly because it’s half empty. The Dutch, flying yet again, have all gone away on holiday, to be replaced by tourists from all over the world. Some of them are from Britain, and it’s mainly for their benefit that the few DutchRead More
